How to See and Listen: Field Methods in Cultural Anthropology
In this workshop, mentees will be introduced to ethnographic field methods and ethnography as a genre of writing. Because our world is more complex and interconnected than ever, it's important to know how to capture those social dynamics in writing that brings alive ideas and cultures from around the world. Being an effective ethnographer includes learning how to see and how to listen, which will be the focus of this 1-week workshop. We are especially interested in finding the seemingly invisible or silent. Mentees will critically and thoughtfully engage with the world around them and learn some new skills!
- Writing & communication
- Critical thinking
Mentees will develop a portfolio through the week of their different assignments, each related to an ethnographic strength. Their final assignment will be to write about their home environment through an ethnographer's eye.
